Dynamic Bike Fitting

What is a Dynamic Bike Fit?

A dynamic bike fit is a bicycle fitting process where your position is assessed while you're pedalling, rather than relying solely on static body measurements. During a dynamic fit, your fitter will typically:

  • Watch you ride on a stationary trainer.

  • Adjust saddle height, saddle fore-aft position, handlebar reach and handlebar drop in real time.

  • Evaluate knee tracking, hip stability, back angle, shoulder position and foot movement.

  • Use motion-capture cameras, sensors, pressure mapping or video analysis to measure joint angles and pedalling mechanics, where appropriate.

The Benefits of a Dynamic Bike Fit

The goals of a dynamic bike fit are to:

  • Improve comfort on longer rides.

  • Increase pedalling efficiency and power transfer.

  • Reduce the risk of overuse injuries, including knee, hip, neck and lower back pain.

  • Optimise performance for your riding style, whether that's commuting, road cycling, gravel, mountain biking or triathlon.

A dynamic fit is generally more comprehensive than a basic static fit because it accounts for how your body moves under load.

Small adjustments that might look fine when you're sitting still can become problematic once you're pedalling.

Is a Dynamic Bike Fit Right for You?

A dynamic bike fit is particularly worthwhile if you:

  • Experience discomfort or numbness while riding.

  • Have recurring cycling-related pain.

  • Have purchased a new bike or changed components, such as your saddle or crank length.

  • Plan to spend many hours riding or want to improve your cycling performance.

Meet Your Bike Fitter – Mat Tippett

Our bike fitter, Mat Tippett, has spent over 15 years fitting cyclists of all levels, from people simply commuting to and from work through to elite triathletes and cyclists. Mat has a relaxed approach, built on sound theory and knowledge gathered through a lifetime of studying, coaching and riding. Previously, ETPA has not offered bike fitting to people outside our coaching program, preferring to use our fitting knowledge as a tool for competitive advantage that benefits only the athletes we coach. We're now opening up this expertise to other cyclists.

What Does the Fitting Process Involve?

The fitting process will likely take 2–3 hours and may involve multiple visits to our studio. Our approach is relaxed, yet methodical. We work through any problems as they present themselves, making adjustments along the way. You won't leave our fitting without a better understanding of how to sit, pedal and ultimately ride your bike better.
