ETPA dominate at WSTC!01.09.10 Ben Pattie and Sarah Lester win! Ben Pattie led the ETPA charge lighting up the WSTC course on Sunday morning. Ben ran a 17:30 off the bike for 5k taking the overall win by 2mins over some accomplished athletes. Ryan Hurrell also won his age group in his first long course event. Young Ryan, only 17 years, had a great first up effort sealing the win with a solid run off the bike.
Dennis Neal, Cameron Wright, Kellie Pitman and Julie Stevenson all had solid days out. Unfortunately Britta Jensen had a DNF after battling with a virus all morning...bad luck Britta. In the Short course Sarah Lester again hit the track in fine form, taking the win by over two minutes. Sarah had the fastest run splits for the day in both run segments. Sarah is now only two weeks out from worlds at Budapest, ETPA wish her luck! Also Dane Heaysman ran the Sandy Point Half Marathon, clocking a time of 86min!
Another great weekend of racing from the ETPA crew, keep up the good work.

Karen Webb struggled with a stomach virus that slowed her progress all day. Karen finished the race with a determined effort. Hard luck stories of the day must go to Dennis Neal and Jarrod Holcombe. Both men recorded DNF's for various reasons. Bad luck boys, redemption is only one race away. International events Challenge Copenhagen Michael Doyle had a great hit out at Challenge Copenhagen. Here's what Michael had to say about it: "This is a great event by the way. They literally run the race through the middle of Copenhagen, closing the place down for the day. There's no Sunday trading which probably makes it a bit easier, but even so when you close off lanes and whole streets in any city you're going to create havoc. The upside of course is the sheer number of people you get on the sidelines. Such a great, great feeling to have that many people cheering"
Michael's results: Overall: 11:35 Swim 1:08 Bike 5:36 Run 4:41 Welsh Cross Triathlon Championships John Williams take the Welsh title! John Williams 1st in age group! Read John's thoughts on his race in his race report Its great seeing so many athletes achieving their goals, great work guys!

Race Report - Fun Tri Challenge - 26/06/1026.06.10
The wintery conditions weren't enough to deter 9 superstars in the making as they tackled ETPAs Fun Tri Challenge on the last Saturday in June. Participants were met with cool temperatures and showers as they arrived at Victoria University's sports complex. Most participants were products of ETPAs Junior Development Program, which runs at Elite Swimming in Pascoe Vale in conjunction with the school term. Adam Marcina and Tyler Forster were completing their first ETPA event, and fit in perfectly with more experienced athletes. Ceza Conner did exceptionally well after only experiencing triathlon for the first time a few weeks ago at an AASC program run by ETPA at Bellbridge Primary School. The event started on VU's pool deck with a briefing before a swim leg ranging from 150m - 250m, under the watchful eye of Coach Jamie Edwards and many excited parents. Well done to Tom Foley and Ceza, who just didn't give up, and Isaac Castellano, April Ziessler and James Boyce who flew through the water - they are all starting to reap the rewards of their ongoing commitment to Thursday evening spent at Pascoe Vale. Next it was out into the damp surrounds, for a 5km bike ride along the Maribyrnong River trail, and then a soggy one, two or three lap run course on the neighbouring grassland. Well done to Evie Davenport who ran away from the group despite being injured on the day and Alex Cook who looked in his element all day. The event is a great opportunity for ETPAs JDP athletes to put their skills into practice, and for newcomers to experience the sport in a fun, safe and non competitive environment where enjoyment and learning are of upmost importance. Congratulations go out to all participants on the day, a great effort:
James Boyce Isaac Castellano Ceza Conner Alex Cook Evie Davenport Tom Foley Tyler Forster Adam Marcina April Ziessler
A special mention goes to the parents for their support and a thank you to ETPA staff who assisted in making the event run smoothly: Ron Ziessler, Ian Scott, Cathie Ziessler and Olivia Atanasovska.
If you have a child who is interested in triathlon but has nowhere to start why not contact ETPAs junior coach, Jamie Edwards at jamie@etpa.com.au to see if he can help.
John's Ironman Austria 70.3 report21.06.2010

ETPA athlete John Williams recetly had a succesful day at the Austria 70.3. He wrote a short report of his race: Ironman Austria 70.3 - 30/7/2010
I choose Austrian 70.3 as my first 'Ironman' branded event mainly as I fancied a trip into Europe and the weather in the UK is...err...rubbish at best! Also, at the back of my mind I fancied giving the full IM a crack in 2011. By doing the 70.3, you were given a code to guarantee entry to the next years Ironman. Which I did...
SWIM Pretty disappointed with this on reflection. Nothing to do with my training, just piss poor time management on my behalf. I was the last competitor in my age-group (25-29) to get into the water as I couldn't find the day bag bin...ended up handing it to some Italian fella and pegging it to the lake. Basically, it's split into two lakes and includes a 250m run in-between. Was looking at a 30min flat swim, but with the amount of bodies in front, I struggled around in 33:50.
T1
A joke. My first ever split transition experience...4:55min. Enough said.
BIKE
Felt very controlled on the bike and with a big winters worth of mtb'ing and a trip to Nepal, I felt pretty strong. The middle distance race I did in the UK was a 52 mile and completed that in 2:30:30. Which at the time felt very good. With this in mind and the extra 4 mile including 3 climbs, I was looking at a >2:45 but surprised myself by getting around in 2:35. With hindsight, I could have pushed harder and tried to get the sub 2:30...
T2
1:45 - Time flies...
RUN
I probably over cooked the fluids on the bike as I came off feeling slightly bloated. Not sure if it was down to the Infinit I was using or the quantity of fluid... Anyhow, with HUGE crowds lining the run course, it's hard not to get carried away and my times reflected this. The first 5.8km was done in 20:08, I paid for this with a pretty tough 5-6km in the middle of the run. With 5km left, I started to pick the pace up and felt a load better. The 3 loops of the tennis stadium are awesome, it's an instant lift. I missed a couple weeks of running due to a hip injury in the build up, so wasn't confident on beating my Half IM run of 1:37 and was looking at sub 1:40 as a realistic target. Turns out I got in at 1:35. A PB nonetheless!
OVERALL
I was aiming at a sub 5hr Half and got under at 4:53. Looking back at my times, I'm pretty pleased, but I know I can go substantially quicker. Hopefully a sub 30min swim is achievable, as is a sub 2:30 bike and a run in under 1:30 is very close.
Next 70.3 I'll be aiming at a finishing time of 4:45 (or a 4:40).
Looking forward to next years debut at Ironman already. Pah! Congrats John, great effort!
A few big weeks of racing for ETPA Athletes11.06.2010 ETPA has again started winter off with a bang! Leading the way in the Austria 70.3 a few weeks ago, John Williamson had a solid day out with a 4:52:00. John is not far away from ETU long course title in a few weeks so he raced on very fatigued legs, great work John. On the local scene, Ken Purves and Dennis Neal both ran marathons with Dennis running a 3:04 to place in the top ten overall at the Sri Chinmoy running festival. Ken ran the great Ocean Road Marathon, which is a brutal event, in a time of 3:56:14 for the 45k event. A heap of athletes ran the 21.1k event and the shorter events at the Sri Chinmoy festival. Ken Purves and Peter Keighery have great days out at Florida 07.12.09 Ken Purves smashes his PB over the 70.3 distance stopping the click at 4:41 with Peter not far behind in 4:44 A great day for both well done! Below is a quick wrap up of the event from Ken Ken Purves Florida 70.3 world titles report Pre race: The flight was dam long. 22 hrs of pain! By the time we arrived my neck was out and my back was very sore. This was due to holding Oskar for hrs at a time while on the flight from Melbourne to LA and lugging backpacks all over the world. As there was the left over of cyclone IDA, there was no chance to swim as it was a washing machine. So what would I do different? I would have arrived about 2 days earlier as the first day & a half I wasn't much chop. I went for a ride and run but didn't feel right at all. By day 3 (the day before the race) I was starting to feel better and went for a controlled ride and felt better but not great. Like most "first races of the year, train as much as possible in the heat. Us Melbournians (well me) just doesn't handle to heat / Sun on the run too well RACE DAY: Well I haven't slept much for the past few nights (Oskar's time zones are still a little messed up and he was in our room - not great when he is awake at 2am and wants to play) I'm quite excited but feeling quite sluggish and very heavy in the legs. As they have changed the swim from the ocean to a canal, we are placed in the water individually and off we go. I had a solid swim and was happy although I don't know my exact swim time as the transition (T1) is built into the swim I think. If this is the case I swam a sub 30 which is a PB. Out of the water and into transition, I get the assistants to rip off the wetsuit and away I go. I have nothing in my transition bag so all I need to do is jam my wetsuit and goggles in and just drop it while I'm on my to my bike. So for me this was a quick transition. On with my helmet, race belt and sunnies and off I go. Onto the course you hit the bridge within the first 2 minutes. So my pre race plan was to use this time to settle my HR and climb the bridge under control without being slack. I did this and from there I started to pick up the pace. By about the 10 K mark no one had passed and the whoosh - some guy on a yellow Trek went by like I was standing still - I thought to myself, count how many go past. Only a couple more until I get to the freeway then all of a sudden peleton after peleton went past me and without a word of a lie, I would say at least 30 - 40 riders in each group. It was a joke even to the extent that we the draft busters went past me I screamed at them about the pack of cheats.... they just nodded their heads and rode off. Pistol Pete even had two people comment about the Aussies and that we ride a fair race! At the turn around some of my nutrition came back up so I just sipped on some red bull (which I have been doing during my training). This didn't really help too much and it came back up again a few more times. I thought bugger this and lifted the tempo a bit and started to catch a few groups and had to make a few big surges to go past them and make sure they didn't come with me. With about 10 - 15 K's to go, I caught a group of about 40 and it took me about 5 K's to get through / past them as there was quite a few turns. I got past them and off over the bridge and into transition.... as I get over the there was a guy riding a bike with one leg (and no prosthetic ---- Yep, One legged x 90 K). Could I have ridden faster - 100% Yes ... what would have the affect been? I have no idea. Did I draft - NOT A CHANCE. I stayed away at that may have cost me some time. So off
