ETPA's biggest weekend of racing a success

18.11.08

ETPA has just had our biggest ever weekend of racing. The ETPA crew, including staff from Physiohealth, made the journey up to Shepparton for the 11th annual Campbell's Shepparton Half Ironman Triathlon. Also during the weekend Andrew Wright continued his great run of form placing in the top ten overall (8th) in the Honk Kong ITU race Saturday, then backed up the following day, taking out the Asian Aquathon Championships.

Some stand out performances from ETPA athletes at Shepparton include a long awaited return to racing from the ever TUFF Dennis Neal. Dennis came third in the male 40-44 age group after a three year hiatus from racing. All things look good for Dennis and his prep for Geelong 70.3 next year.

All the boys going to WA for the Ironman in three weeks raced on very fatigued legs and still turned out solid performances on their home turf with PB's from Xavier, James, Ben and Stephen. The big engine of Xavier set up a great time on the bike of 2:22 which was the fastest ride of our group for the day.

New athletes to our group and in their first Half IM, Georgia Vipond, Ben Pattie, Aaron Slight and Paul Field all had great races with Georgia coming in 4th in her age group.

Tony Durand, from ETPA Bass Coast regional program, had a great race as well as old strong men Ian Scott (4th male 55-59) and Archie Ball. The biggest PB award of the day goes to Marcus Cook the home town boy from Shep in his second half turned out a 25min PB

As with all great days we had some uncontrollable problems with two of our chargers DNF'ing due to sickness or injury...better luck next time boys.

ETPA also had some results from the Hexman event...

Sue O'Conner and Jill Stevenson waved the flag high on the day with solid outings. The "legend" award must go to Jill who came off her bike and was seen riding with one arm. Jill crossed the finish line with a smile on her face and quickly made her way to the ETPA tent for a massage and some Physiotherapy provided by Physiohealth. Also a quick shout out to Morgan Deegan, a former ETPA athlete, now under the wise leadership of Sean Foster in smashing the Hexman event in a great lead-in to WA full.

Andrew Wright stepped into overdrive on the weekend with two great races. The first was the Honk Kong ITU event where Andrew came in 8th overall. Andrew was in the mix all day with a great swim/ride combination setting up a 30min 10k run off the bike.

The following day Andrew turned it on winning the Asian Aquathon Championships. Andrews devastatingly quick swim opened the race up with no one able to match him on the day.

A special note to Physiohealth for keeping our athletes bodies in great shape leading into the weekend's race then repairing them after the event. The team at Physiohealth, lead by Justin McEvoy, went beyond the call of duty on Sunday treating over 40 athletes after the event. Great work guys

ETPA congratulates all athletes who participated on the weekend and look forward reading the race reports!

Captain CrankIT tears up Kona

19.10.08

It looks like we may have to move Julian “Captain Crankit” Wain off the “inactive” list of ETPA athletes!

Prior to the Ford Ironman World Championships Captain sent an email:

“so I'VE DECIDED on nude-ing up in T2 this year. Why am I telling you??? well, I’m wearing your race suit on the bike.... I've worn it on a few training rides both earlier this year in LANZA and here in KONA... .. I Iike it,....so I'M riding in it. T2 WILL SEE me change into a two piece for the run for better cooling. All good, Now,.. tell me how are you going to justify putting this pic on your website when I'm listed as "inactive" ;) you're a smart boy I'm sure you'll find a way.”

With the much anticipated race getting closer lots of well wishes and reports were sent back and forth from Kona to Australia. Despite his “inactive” status Captain had another smashing race in Kona and lived up to all expectations.

Here is what he had to say after the race:

“We'll I've finished here again, it's really just an honour to race on this iconic course with so many top athletes.

Thankful to not have had any bike mechanical issues and ultimately crossed the line for another 10 hour finish,... that's 6 from 6 IM's. Although this one being my third fastest time at 10:15 and some change it was my most satisfying.

TOP 100 in my age group (JUST,.. 99TH) OUT OF 237 which was one goal for the World Championships. Also wanted to go sub 10 hours with a sub 5 hour bike being a bonus,,.. unfortunately neither happened. The Island served up a brutal day weather wise, severe winds on the bike leg, oppressive humidity along Alii Dr at the start of the marathon and then hitting 40deg in the Natural energy lab which is 28ish km in with 14 to run. The tough bike conditions were evidenced by Pro's riding 10-15 minutes slower than "normal" Kona conditions, so that translates to 20ish minutes slower on the bike for "mere mortal" age groupers... so I reckon the conditions cheated me out of my sub 5 hour bike time and sub 10, 9 hour finish. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. My running has come along nicely since 2007 so although I did slow mid-marathon I ran the final 14 km in 1 hour 11 minutes which is JUST about 5 minutes per k. Crossed the line for a 3:40 marathon which I'm wrapped with - ALL GOOD.

AWESOME spectator support from Nicole, BAB'S, Komo and Traeges,- HUGE THANK YOU.. AND great support from the numerous other Aussies spectating and randoms that took a liking to the "Captain Crank it" across my butt.

SWIM BIKE RUN OVERALL

1:08:03 5:19:30 3:40:46 10:15:41

Now time to kick back and eat ice cream,...my next challenge will be keeping off the pud'n. Will be back in London Monday 20th. OVER AND OUT”

All ETPA’rs were stoked to hear that he had another successful campaign in Kona and all envy Captain “living the dream”.

He managed to pull off another quality finish which can be viewed here http://ironman.com/events/ironman/worldchampionship/?show=tracker&rid=172&year=2008 type in race number 1214 and click ‘watch me finish’.

VRR 10k and half Marathon Results

26.08.08

New Guys to ETPA, Andrew Wright and young Jamie Edwards had great runs in the 10k event. Andrew cleaned up taking the win in an impressive time of 32:30 and young Jamie came in second place in a time of 37:30 which is also a PB

In the Half Marathon Nerissa Stafford and Paul Field both had great races with Paul running a 14 minute PB in a time of 1:31:53. Nerissa also had a solid day out in her lead up to WA IM with a time of 1:40 in her first Half Marathon in ETPA colours. Both athletes are happy with their races and enjoy the benefits of the changes in running style that ETPA have made with them.

Rydges Capricorn Half Ironman Results

26.08.08

A great day was had up in Sunny Yeppoon for the Rydges Capricorn Half Ironman. The ETPA crew waved the flag high. The biggest of them all Xavier, weighing in at 90kg, did another PB with an explosive ride time of 2:23. Xavier Stopped the clock in an impressive overall time of 4:35 and is certainly becoming a force on the bike. Only in his first year with ETPA, and deep in volume for WA IM, this result was a little unexpected and sets an impressive bench mark for the upcoming season.

James Duncan again had a solid race with three strong disciplines and a controlled effort throughout. As with Xavier and all the other boys who raced Yeppoon James is deep in volume for WA and had a controlled race stopping the clock at 4:37. Improving speed over the third lap of the run course puts him in a great place for WA.

Ben Robinson and Ian Scott also made the long journey up to Yeppoon and both had cracking races. Talking with Ben post race he indicated that his PB time of 4:51 was not up to standard for him...he, as with all ETPA'rs, has high standards and is continually looking for big gains each time he races. Ian Scott again as impressive as ever in the first Half IM he has controlled from start to finish. Ian raced the event like a seasoned athlete controlling is HR and leaving the door open for big IM in December. The analysis of the HR data suggests Ian was only at 80% all day and had lots more "gas" when required. This is truly a great result for the "Big Boy" moving forward.

Special note to Craig McKenzie, who Mat does some training with, coming in Third Overall. Great effort mate.

 MEDIA RELEASE

19.08.08

Elite Triathlon Performance Australia (ETPA) and Physiohealth have combined their resources to develop a program that will be a first in Australia - an integrated screening system for athletes.

It is an exciting time for the evolution of Physiohealth partnering with ETPA to develop screening, treatment and rehabilitation programs for beginner and elite level triathletes. This partnership will be a win for sport in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Both ETPA and Physiohealth are looking forward to being able to increase the level of sport participation in the West.

Physiohealth has an elite outlook in the way it assists athletes perform and has shown that in the past with it's close relationship with Swimming Australia, soccer, badminton, boxing, gymnastics and dancing. Physiohealth has three of its staff currently in Beijing at the games.

ETPA share a similar vision of sports coaching and its Triathlon program is widely regarded as industry leading. Working together, both organisations have developed a screening package that reflects the specific needs of triathletes. The screening assessment conducted by Physiohealth will cover all issues that relate to a triathletes performance and their general wellbeing. It will assist new athletes entering the sport safely and keep existing athletes injury free for longer.

An athlete who takes part in this program can start the process from their own home or wherever best suits them. All that is required is an email to ETPA who will then coordinate booking the athlete an appointment with Physiohealth for a screening assessment. Once the appointment has been completed Physiohealth will email the results back to an ETPA coach with a specific plan designed around that person's strengths and weaknesses. The coach then is able to email the athlete a summary and new training program that best suits their individual needs.

ETPA offers email based training programs, venue based group training programs, online customer interface, online product sales and a well defined triathlon and multisport coaching network with access to the worlds leading specialist providers.

Physiohealth provides a holistic approach to prevention and rehabilitation in the following areas: physiotherapy, dietetics, myotherapy, massage, exercise physiology and Pilates.

Since 2002, ETPA has transformed itself from a sole trader, operating with only a handful of personal clients to a company that employs six staff who coordinate three venues and services approximately 150 athletes. ETPA is looking forward to working closely with Physiohealth who has been treating patients at the highest level for over 20 years and who has 14 physiotherapists working out of 6 locations across Melbourne.

The launch of the partnership and screening assessment will be celebrated with ETPA and Physiohealth providing a free running singlet for any athlete who participates in a screening assessment conducted during the launch week beginning 1 September. To make a booking or for more information please contact Mat Tippet - Director, ETPA via email mat@etpa.com.au call the ETPA office directly on 9399 3958 or visit http://www.etpa.com.au/ You may also contact Physiohealth directly on 9317 8999 or footscray@physiohealth.com.au

WSTC Duathlon Results

01.07.08

Congratulations to the ETPA young guns, or should we say one old gun and a few new young guys who raced at the WSTC Duathlon on Sunday!

Young Jamie Edwards put in a solid effort in his first race in ETPA colours, clocking an impressive three and a half minute PB. Jamie is only 10 weeks into his ETPA program and the results are starting to come.

Aaron slight, also a new athlete, had a great race in his first ever Duathlon, stopping the clock at 1:18 with three solid legs. Let's not forget Gordon Sutherland's great performance after a 6 hour ride in the hills the day before. This was Gordon's first race with ETPA and he had a solid hit out. We expect big things from Gordon so stay tuned!

Last but not least Archie Ball again won his age group with two solid run legs. Archie almost chased down the younger guys in the last few kilometres...again he just keeps getting faster!

Gordon Sutherland1:12:22
Aaron Slight 1:18:12
Adrian Ball1:13:11

Good Luck Sarah

In cold and wet conditions a bunch of hardcore athletes competed in the Hobos 5km and 10km Fun Runs. A number of ETPA'rs competed, putting some solid performances. In the 5km, 1st overall was Archie Ball in a time of 19:20. In the 10km, 1st overall was Jarrod Holcombe in 37:14 and 3rd overall was James Duncan in 38:06.

Busselton Half Ironman Results

04.05.08

The results are in for the Busselton Half Ironman! The ETPA'rs had some solid results.

James Harvey: Swim - 00:32:08, Bike - 02:34:24, Run - 02:03:53, Total - 05:15:30. James gets Coach Tippet's ' encouragement award for the day', he rode himself into the ground, clocking a 15min PB for the 90k time trial...then found out what life on the "wrong side" of the pain line is like with a 2:05 half marathon. Good learning experience in his second half IM.

James Monahan: Swim - 00:31:57, Bike - 02:23:16, Run - 01:42:44, Total - 04:42:12. James clocked a 12m PB...left his race on the track. Great effort after only 12weeks in the ETPA program

Sarah Egan: Swim - 00:40:03, Bike - 02:37:24, Run - 01:46:14, Total - 05:09:30. Yet again Sarah steps up and has a PB race on fatigued legs in her lead in for world titles in a few weeks.

Great results guys!

Woodend BMC 100km Cross Country Mountain Bike Marathon Results

25.04.08

ETPA athlete Bec Locke raced in a mountain bike marathon during the weekend, finishing with a great result.

Bec reported back:

It was in it's first year and was awesome! Held in the trails around Woodend (Cammery Waters) it was a very tough course full of single track with logs, berms, log bridges and topped off with an hour or so of pine trails and lots of climbing right near the end.
We had great weather and with a staggered bunch start it was easy to find your position without to much pushing and shoving.
I had a good race coming in 2nd elite female around 2mins behind the leader in a 5hr 30min race. Considering my technical skills need a little work I was quite happy.
Will be looking forward to the race again next year.

Well done Bec!

Panthers Ironman Australia Results

12.04.08

Congratulations to the contingent of ETPA athletes that raced in Port Macquarie. Ironman Australia was a huge event and the day looked to be a horrible one weather wise. The skies opened up as the athletes were doing final prep in transition. Luckily for athletes and spectators alike the weather at race start cleared up and stayed pleasant for the rest of the day (reports are that the rain stuck around out the back of the bike course making the ride a little more uncomfortable for the athletes). ETPA'rs threw down some solid efforts with a number of great personal bests and some impressive leave it all on the race track racing.

In no particular order the results were:

Peter Keighery:
Swim - 01:04:26, T1 - 3:47, Ride - 05:45:22, T2 - 3:09, Run - 4:20:18, Total - 11:13:53. Peter improved on his previous PB by 2hours!

Swim - 01:03:09, T1 - 3:59, Ride - 05:13:51, T2 - 1:52, Run - 3:49:56, Total - 10:06:56.
Mark pushed all day and certainly left his race on the track - great effort!

Rick Cooke:

Rick was looking solid all day and had a blinding sprint finish with another guy, almost cleaning up Ken at the finish line!

Great work guys!

Good Luck ETPA'rs racing at Panthers Ironman Australia

Cape Paterson Olympic Distance Results

20.03.08

ETPA'rs James Monahan, Ron Ziessler and James Duncan (me) raced the Cape Paterson Olympic Distance Triathlon on Sunday 16th March. It was a super hot day with temperatures in the high 30s. The race was great fun and well organized for a small local event. James Monahan had a solid race after riding 140km the day before coming 1st in his age-group and Ron was on track for a great result till he succumbed to not one but two punctures! He repaired them both and carried on to finish strong. James Duncan had a solid swim and run, fading in the heat to finish 6th overall.

Good work guys.

ETPA'r Bec Locke 6th place Woman at
Lowam Otway Odyssey 100km Mountain Bike Race

24.02.08

Congratulations to ETPA athlete Bec Locke who had a great mountain bike race during the weekend.

Here is what Bec had to say about it:

Lowam Otway Odyssey 100km Mountain Bike Race.

What an experience I couldn't have imaged that the race was going to be that hard ( The climbing felt endless). The weather was very average making the course an absolute mud pit . All I can say is that I'm glad I was in the top 60, as all the climbs in the first 20km once into the bush where unrideable . I can't imagine what it would have been like when the 1250th person came through.

The race started off well for me. I managed to get to the top of the first 10km climb equal 1st girl and I was in 3rd position by about the 45km mark .Unfortunately this is where all the technical section started and my mtb skills leave a little to be desired at the moment (nothing a little bit of practice won't help) .

I held on to 5th place for the rest of the race until I snapped my seat post, leaving me to ride the last 12km out of the saddle . At that time of the race it wasn't much fun at all . If I had enough energy I probably would have cried . I finally got to the end in 6th place feeling a little sore and sorry for myself after I had a couple of really good crashes. The race took about 7hrs and the course was slower by about 45min to last year overall.

I can't say I'm unhappy with my race as I gave it all I had and came 6th place in a pretty hot field ( 2 commonwealth riders an American world cup rider ) and I had a seat malfunction. It Was ok.

With a bit of technique riding who knows for next year.

Well done Bec!!

It is now time to do what the early mornings / late afternoons / weekends and other training sessions have all been leading towards.

The now - 4 years of pain and experience will be used to its max.

I'm off to that Island of New Zealand to tackle what they say is the oldest IM race - Saturday 1st March.

Snap Ironman 70.3 Geelong

13.02.08

A huge congratulations to the large ETPA contingent that tore up the Snap Ironman 70.3 Geelong course on Sunday. I am sure most will agree it was a tough course that tested everyone. Some of the ETPArs were using the race as prep for bigger things, i.e. Ironman, while for others this was the goal race of the season. There were some rock solid performances and some tired looking finishers on the day.

In the pro field, defending Ironman 70.3 World Champion Mirinda Carfrae dominated the women's event while in the men’s race, Australia’s Leon Griffin powered home to take the Snap Ironman 70.3 Geelong title.
